Just the other day, a musician friend was telling me he’s thinking about starting his
own record label business, and that got me thinking. I began looking on the internet for information that might be available on that subject. As usual, there’s a lot!

Almost all of the “experts” on the subject agreed on one thing.  To make the best
“deals”, it’s best to have a lawyer who’s familiar with the music industry,
and associated contracts in particular.

However, having said that, lawyers can be expensive. The next best thing would be preparing contracts yourself so that you at least “put it in writing”. Well, not many of us really know how to write contracts, or exactly what should be included in them.

The best thing to do, next to hiring a lawyer, might be to purchase a package of pre-written contracts, and taylor them to your situation. At least they’ll be written in
“legalese”, and afford some protection and comfort.
