Surfin’ With The Beach Boys… Not!

The Beach Boys had finished recording some things and taken off. So we packed up the 24 track master tape and it was taken to Stapleton (the Denver airport in those days) to be shipped to California so they could work with it. It was in the middle of the winter and had snowed all night in Denver. The next morning Jimmy came storming into the shop and asked me if I had made a copy. Fortunately I had been taught to always make copies, so I said “yes”. Jimmy sighed and said, “You’re going to Los Angeles.”

Then he explained that for some reason the freight company had left the master tape on a dock all night in the snow, and it was soaked! I was going to hand carry the copy to L.A. and hand it to the Beach Boys personally. We went to the airport and I got on the plane with tape in hand, and flew to L. A. with it in my lap.

When I got there, I had instructions to go to a certain exit and meet someone to give it to. I remThe Beach Boys Love Youember standing there for a while, and then an old beat up pickup drove up ( it had to be their surfin’ truck), and a guy hopped out. He asked me if I was Tom with the tape, and I said “yes”. I didn’t recognize him, but he said he was there to pick it up. After giving it to him, I had to go right back into L.A.X. and get on the next plane back to Denver.

When I returned to the ranch it was late afternoon. I could hardly believe that my day had consisted of a flight to and from Los Angeles. But the craziest part was that I’d gone to meet the Beach Boys and I didn’t even get to go surfing!

Rod Lugs 2 Fender Guitar Amps For Me!

When I learned that Rod Stewart was coming to the ranch, my heart skipped a beat! No, not because of Rod, but because of his girl friend at the time – Britt Ekland. Rod Stewart and Britt Ekland

In high school several of my friends and I were big Peter Seller fans, and when we saw The Bobo, we flipped over Britt. She was that perfect Swedish girl. Later she became one of the famous Bond girls  – Mary Goodnight – in The Man With The Golden Gun.

And I was about to meet her in person!

Needless to say, after meeting Rod, I was introduced to Britt. She was just as beautiful in person as in the movies, and she spent a lot of time in the control room sitting on the couch just a few feet away from me. Being the professional I was, though, I kept my eyes on the tape recorders at all times.

And now to my story about Rod.

At the time, Tom Dowd was his producer, and he brought Rod to Caribou to do some overdubs and mixing of the album “A Night On The Town”.

A SPECIAL NOTE:

It was a great priviledge and honor to work with Tom Dowd several times while I was at Caribou. Tom was a true Legend in the recording industry, and anyone with any interest at all in the history of recording should watch this The Language Of Music. It is fantastic!

You’ll see Tom as he records Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, the Allman Brothers, and on and on. Tom was a pioneer in the industry, and a master of the art of recording.

One of my most cherished tapes is Eric Clapton doing “Smile” by Charlie Chaplin. I assisted Tom with the mix, and I don’t think that version was ever released.

During the session, Tom asked me if I’d get a couple of the guitar amps we kept downstairs. I said, “Sure”. After all, that was part of my job – being a Gopher. Go Pher this and Go Pher that.

As I opened the door to head downstairs, Rod grabbed it and said, “I’ll help you.”  He and I went down the stairs and down the hall to the storage room. There were 3 Fender amps, and Rod just picked up 2 and said, “Grab that one, too.” We carried them down the hall to the elevator and rode it up to the studio. Again, he grabbed 2, and I picked up one. That allowed me to open the studio door with one hand, and Rod carried the 2 amps into the studio. I followed with my amp.

At that point, he headed back to the control room, so I said, “Thank you.” Then I finished plugging them in and putting mics on them.

I just wanted to tell this story because at that time Rod was really popular and recording a lot of hits. I had heard he was somewhat of a “prima donna”, but I found him to be very pleasant, and he didn’t have to help me at all. He could have just sat in the control room with Britt and waited for me to lug the amps.

We recorded the final vocal for “Tonight’s The Night”, which is the song that features whispers from Britt. The song became his second US chart topper, peaked at #5 in UK, #3 in Australia and charted well in other parts of the world as well. It was also the 61st video to be played on the debut of MTV on August 1, 1981

We’ll All Miss Dan Fogelberg

Dan left us this morning at 6:00am . He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side. His strength, dignity, and grace in the face of the daunting challenges of this disease were an inspiration to all who knew him.”  Dan Fogelberg’s website.

Dan FogelbergI first met Dan when he was recording Captured Angel. Since he lived nearby, he visited the ranch often, and we all knew him.

A Few of My memories:

I remember helping Al Burnham design and build a home stereo for Dan’s mountain home. Al installed it there, too.  I also remember an evening of pool, beer, and chit chat in Nederland at the Pioneer Inn.  I believe Joe Walsh, Jeff Guercio, John Carsello, and Dan were all there. And, one of my slides of the ranch shows Norbert Putnam in a blinding snowstorm.

He will be greatly missed in the music world, because he wrote such great songs.  It seems like almost anyone you talk to has a memory associated with one of Dan’s songs.  I know I do!

Be sure to visit his website, Dan Fogelberg.com , and if you’d care to offer your thoughts or message of condolence, you can do that here: http://www.thelivinglegacy.net/wishes.html

Also, Dan realized he had made a huge mistake by not checking his health more diligently. (He was only 56 years old.) And he became an advocate for regular PSA screening, and you can donate in his name at the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Dan, we’ll miss you.  My hope is that you are now lending your beautiful voice to a choir of angels in Heaven.

Please take a moment to sign the petition to have Dan inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Petition started April 4, 2010.
